There are more people over the age of 65 alive today than during any other period in American history. The U.S. Census Bureau projects the number of older people will surpass the number of children within the next decade\u2026 and by the year 2030, adults 65 and older will more than double to over 92 million. In response to this increasing need, it is critical that mental health professionals be equipped to assist the elderly. This course offers helpful and practical insights for ongoing training for mental health professionals. This three-part series features noted Christian mental health experts, Timothy Jennings, Kathie Erwin, and Linda Mintle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Participants will&#8230;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Identify factors that accelerate aging, common illnesses in aging, and interventions that slow the aging process and maximize functioning.<\/li>\n<li>Describe how to teach caregivers to respond to those who have Alzheimer\u2019s disease and other self-care techniques for the caregivers.<\/li>\n<li>Discuss ways to prepare a family for end of life issues and decisions that occur in this stage of life.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Course Titles and Descriptions\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AGS 101: Acute and Chronic Illness in the Aging<\/p>\n<p>Timothy Jennings, M.D.<br \/>\nThis lesson focuses on aging, factors that accelerate aging, common illnesses in aging, and interventions that slow the aging process and maximize functioning. Aging is a chronological and functional process, but functional aging incorporates a more accurate depiction of the aging process.<\/p>\n<p>Runtime: 53 minutes 33 seconds<\/p>\n<p>AGS 102: Behavior Challenges and Personality Changes with Alzheimer\u2019s and Dementia<\/p>\n<p>Kathie Erwin, Ed.D.<br \/>\nErratic, unpredictable behaviors are part of Alzheimer\u2019s disease and other dementias, which cause the greatest frustration for family caregivers. What can seem to be an appropriate response is often the wrong response. Helping families understand behavioral challenges with this disease is crucial to teaching them how to better cope as each stage unfolds.<\/p>\n<p>Runtime: 50 minutes 4 seconds<\/p>\n<p>AGS 103: End-of-Life: Family Issues and Decision Making<\/p>\n<p>Linda Mintle, Ph.D.<br \/>\nThroughout our lives, we plan for everything \u2013 weddings, vacations, retirements, job transfers-but many of us avoid planning for the end of life. This session focuses on family issues and decision making that are part of the end-of-life experience with the elderly.
