A client\u2019s culture, beliefs, gender, values, race and language all affect how they perceive and experience mental health conditions. In fact, cultural differences can influence what treatments, coping mechanisms, and supports work best for a client. To provide effective care, Mental Health Professionals need to understand how culture and identity need to be addressed in the therapeutic relationship. <\/span>Cultural Competency in Mental Healthcare 2.0<\/span><\/b> will discuss how to interact effectively with people of different cultures by incorporating their unique beliefs, behaviors, and needs into their diagnosis, treatment plan, and outcomes process.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    CCM 101: Overview of Cultural Competency and Implicit Bias<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Elias Moitinho, Ph.D.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Cultural competency includes attitudes, knowledge, and skills that enables a Mental Health Professional to care effectively for clients from diverse cultures, groups, and communities. In this lesson, Dr. Elias Moitinho\u00a0will discuss the foundation of cultural competence from a faith-based perspective and how to eliminate the potentially negative effects of implicit biases.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    CCM 102: Building Rapport with Diverse Clients<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Fredrica Brooks-Davis, Psy.D.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    One of the most consistent and robust predictors of outcomes in traditional talk therapy is the quality of the client-therapist alliance. In this lesson, Dr. Fredrica Brooks-Davis will discuss client diversity, focus on building a strong therapeutic connection, and factors to consider in diagnosing and treatment planning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    CCM 103: Honoring Spirituality and Religion in the Therapeutic Relationship<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Fernando Garzon, Psy.D.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The diversity of religion within our world’s population brings challenges for mental healthcare professionals to develop understanding and then, in turn, offer culturally competent care that meets the unique needs of patients and their families. In this lesson, Dr. Fernando Garzon will discuss critical ethics for integrating spirituality\/faith as a diversity variable, including informed consent initially and as a process, and how to utilize the therapeutic relationship as a vehicle for spiritual growth.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Course Presenters:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Elias Moitinho, Ph.D.,<\/span><\/b> has many years of ministry and teaching experience as a pastor, counselor, seminary professor, and director of a Christian counseling center. Before joining Liberty University, he served as the Hope for the Heart Chair of Biblical Counseling at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. At Liberty University, Dr. Moitinho has served as director of counseling licensure programs and director of clinical training for the Department of Counselor Education and Family Studies. He is interested in marriage enrichment, marriage counseling, multicultural counseling, and the integration of Scriptures in counseling. Additionally, Dr. Moitinho has taught as a guest professor in seminaries in Mexico, Cuba, and Spain. Dr. Moitinho and his wife are the authors of the book <\/span>The Dream Home: How to Create an Intimate Christian Marriage<\/span><\/i>, published in 2020 by Kendall Hunt Publishing Company.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Frederica Brooks-Davis, Psy.D., <\/span><\/b>is the founder and Executive Director of the Restoration Center. She consults with the Mother Emanuel Empowerment Center and is the founder of Destiny Empowerment and Consulting Services. She is also the President and co-founder of the Brooks-Davis Institute for Brain Cancer Awareness. Dr. Brooks-Davis has a B. A. degree in psychology, and an M.A. and Psy.D. in clinical psychology with a specialization in program development and consultation. She has published articles, presented at numerous professional conferences, and facilitates workshops and training in public and private sectors.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Fernando Garzon, Psy.D.,<\/span><\/b> is a licensed psychologist, ordained minister and clinical outcomes-based researcher. He received his B.A. in Biology at Wake Forest University and his Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fuller Seminary. Prior to Regent, Dr. Garzon was a professor at Liberty University in their Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Ed.D. in Community Care & Counseling programs. His clinical experience has encompassed outpatient practice, managed care, hospital, pastoral care and church settings. Dr. Garzon\u2019s research and writings focus on building an empirical base for spiritually-focused protocols in clinical practice, exploring brief cognitive restructuring strategies, multicultural issues, Christian worldview pedagogy, and researching lay Christian counseling approaches in the church environment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
