According to SAMHSA, more than two-thirds of children reported at least one traumatic event by age 16. Traumatic experiences for children leave a legacy of reminders that can persist for years and elicit various responses. Those working with traumatized children must consider presenting and comorbid mental health issues, epigenetics, and implementing developmentally appropriate interventions. Childhood Trauma, Epigenetics, Mental Health and Treatment 2.0 will help Mental Health Professionals understand the etiology of children’s challenges, build an awareness of the effect of epigenetics, and recognize the foundations of lifespan mental health challenges.

Learning Objectives 

Participants will: 

  1. List basic etiological and epigenetic contributors to children’s mental issues
  2. Discuss the fundamental psychological and neurobiological effects of trauma on children 
  3. Assess various developmentally appropriate interventions with traumatized children 

Presenters

Michele Louviere, M.A., is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 25 years of counseling experience. She has a Master of Divinity in Psychology and Counseling degree and one year of doctoral work from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and a Bachelor of Science in English Education from Louisiana State University. After completing her internship as a counselor at Celebration Church in Metairie, LA, Michele moved to Portland, Oregon, where she was first licensed as a LMFT and practiced for eight years. 

Daniel S. Sweeney, PhD, LPC, LMFT, ACS, RPT-S*, is the founder and director of the Northwest Center for Play Therapy Studies. He is also a tenured professor of counseling and Clinical Director of the Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling program in the Graduate School of Counseling at George Fox University. Dr. Sweeney is a former member of the board of directors and past-president of the Association for Play Therapy, a registered play therapist-supervisor (RPT-S) and maintains a small private practice. Daniel has extensive experience in working with children, couples, and families in a variety of settings, including therapeutic foster care, community mental health, private practice, and pastoral counseling. He has presented at regional, national and international conferences on the topics of play therapy, sandtray therapy, filial therapy, couple and family therapy, and trauma interventions.
