Course Lessons

SGLP 101: The Theology and Healing Power of Small Groups

Small group ministries and support groups represent a growing array of caregiving options for many churches and faith-based organizations. Drs. Jared Pingleton and Eric Scalise review the historical and biblical basis for incorporating this dynamic orientation into ongoing service delivery, as well as the research related to outcomes, recovery issues, and personal transformation.

SGLP 102: Types of Groups and Group Leadership

Drs. Pingleton and Scalise explore the various types of small group approaches, such as task groups, fellowship groups, psychoeducational groups, and support groups. The pros and cons of each type and various myths related to small group ministry are discussed, along with the role, characteristics, and facilitator skills needed for effective small group leadership.

SGLP 103: Ethics and Cultural Dynamics of Small Groups

As with any ministry-related effort that works with hurting and broken people, ethical and potential liability considerations must be strategically addressed and incorporated into any small or support group program. Drs. Pingleton and Scalise examine needed group rules and boundaries, as well as other structural components, including screening, joint leadership, confidentiality, and more.
