About This Course

The Global Flourishing Study has shown that, around the world, forgiveness is something people in almost all countries seek to practice. No matter what type of mental health practice or therapy a client is seeking, knowing how to effectively and efficiently help people forgive is essential. Basic forgiveness studies have yielded over ten practical tips to accomplish forgiveness-based goals with clients. In this training, three sources of evidence-based interventions, the Stress-and-coping Theory of Forgiveness, REACH Forgiveness Model, and the Enright Process mode of forgiveness, are summarized to help the participant teach and utilize forgiveness effectively in client care. The stress-and-coping theory of forgiveness provides practical interventions, while special emphasis is given to the REACH Forgiveness model in groups or DIY workbooks, and the Enright Process model in forgiveness therapy and educational settings with youth. Furthermore, participants will identity ways to engage with willing Christian clients with spiritually based practices, such as many types of prayer, use of Scripture, and other resources within the church community.

Lesson Titles

FRGV 101: Forgiveness Studies Reveal Over 10 Practical Tips to Treat Clients
Everett L. Worthington, Jr., Ph.D.
Fundamentals of forgiveness science have often been neglected in the mental health profession, but in this module, participants will find at least ten practical ways to draw from new research, using the stress-and-coping theory of forgiveness to help clients forgive. We examine what the data says about topics like the injustice gap, alternatives to forgiveness, and two types of forgiveness.

FRGV 102: Using 12 Evidence-Based Forgiveness Interventions with Clients
Everett L. Worthington, Jr., Ph.D.
Two interventions have the most evidence supporting their effectiveness—the REACH Forgiveness model for psychoeducational groups and DIY workbooks and Enright’s Process model for intensive counseling for severe problems and for classroom instruction with youth. Many other approaches that have also been found to be effective will be reviewed, which include Luskin’s CBT approach, Wade’s group process therapy, Greenberg’s EFT couple-therapy approach, and Baucom’s method of helping couples who have had affairs.

FRGV 103: Integrating Forgiveness Interventions and Christian Methods to Help Clients Forgive
Everett L. Worthington, Jr., Ph.D.
In this session, participants will learn how to extract common principles from the existing evidence-based treatments, scientifically supported knowledge, and proven-practical faith-based treatments to help integrate what evidence supports into your approach to helping willing Christian clients to forgive.
