About This Course
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based, client-centered approach to facilitating behavioral change. Originally developed by William Miller and Stephen Rollnick, MI provides a structured yet relational method for increasing motivation, resolving ambivalence, and enhancing engagement. This course introduces participants to the foundational principles and practices of MI, including the core Spirit of MI: partnership, acceptance, compassion, and evocation. It emphasizes practical strategies for promoting autonomy and collaborative care. Whether serving in a clinical setting or in a professional coaching role, mental health professionals often encounter the temptation to “fix” or direct clients, which can unintentionally hinder engagement and long-term growth. MI offers a framework that respects client autonomy and supports informed decision-making, aligning well with a biblically informed view of human dignity, responsibility, and relational care. This training equips Christian counselors and coaches to integrate MI principles into conversations about change while maintaining ethical boundaries and clearly defined scopes of practice.
